The Slavkov Forest and Kladska Nature Reserve

Between the points of the West Bohemian Spa Triangle lies the Slavkov Forest protected area, formerly know as the Emperor’s Forest. This is a truly idyllic place where many rare species of fauna and flora have found refuge. Somewhat unfairly, this region is often overlooked, but those who make the effort to reach it are often amazed by its romance and mystery. It is considered to be one of the most gorgeous and romantic places in western Bohemia. When it comes to the landscape of the Slavkov forest, it is very gripping and riveting – apart from lowlands with beautiful lakes and forests that stretch very close to mountain peaks there are three volcanoes –  Uhelny trh, Andeslka hora and Komorni hurka. These, along with numerous natural mineral springs, are considered to be some of the biggest tourist attractions of the Slavkov forest.

The Czech Republic is well-known for its network of well-marked hiking trails and this holds true for the Slavkov Forest, too. The Kladska nature trail (just a few miles away from the famous spa town of Marianske lazne) leads walkers through one area with lots of information on various aspects of its natural history and its rare flora and fauna provided along the way. Mineral springs have created a peat bog at Kladska which you can visit by following a raised timber walkway surrounded by hectares of national forests that bridges the boggy ground. When visiting Kladska, you can also see the neighboring Kyselé jezero, one of the most acidic lakes in the whole of Europe. In Kladska, deep forests with magnificent places and evergreen trees with branches stretching all the way to the ground surround you on all sides. All in all, there is nothing that one would not like when visiting this enthralling nature reserve that surely helps you connect with nature.
