Czech Fruit Dumplings

Fruit dumplings are served as a main dish, even though they seem more like a breakfast or dessert. They are a great choice if you have a taste for sweet food or if you are a vegetarian. Many seasonal kinds of fruit are used for making delicious dumplings. Fruit dumplings are usually filled with plums, apricots, strawberries or blueberries. They can be filled with frozen fruit. As for the topping there are also many variations see in below in our ingredients.

Ingredients

Dumplings:
1 lb Wondra instant flour
1 cup milk
1 egg
3 Tsp sugar
1 Tsp salt
1 Tsp instant yeast
at least 1 lb of fruit

Topping, according to taste
melted unsalted butter with one of the following:
plain bread crumbs with powdered sugar
or ground poppy seed with powdered sugar
or cinnamon with powdered sugar
or farmer’s cheese (or queso fresco) with powdered sugar
or sour cream or yogurt with powdered sugar

Instructions

Mix all the ingredients together. Sift flour on a board, add the mixture and knead the dough until smooth. Cut the dough into small pieces and wrap the fruit into the dough. Steam for 7 minute or boil about 5 – 8 minutes (depending on size) in salted water. Then immediately remove the dumplings from the water.  Poke them with a fork to release steam. Serve warm with the toppings.
