Beer-Battered Fried Bologna Sausage

Czech name: Smažený salám v těstíčku

Written by Barbora Kubatova

This recipe was sometimes made by Czech mothers and grandmother in the days when there were not that many things in the fridge. They always managed to create a lot out of a little. Considering this is a beer-battered sausage, as it says in the name, it makes people more fully appreciate the Czech culture because where there is beer involved, there are Czechs! This recipe is easy enough to make and tastes yummy, too! All the ingredients are something one should find in any fridge. It is also great if you have some leftover sausage you wish to get rid of, or when you need something quite quick and fairly easy.

Ingredients

3 slices Bologna sausage (1-inch thick)
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup beer of your choice
2 eggs
salt and ground black pepper to taste
oil for frying

Instructions

Prepare 3 separate bowls into which you distribute the flour, the beer, and eggs. Whisk the eggs and season with salt and pepper. Cut the sausage into (1-inch thick) 3 slices and coat them first in flour, then in the beer, and lastly in the eggs so it makes a nice runny coat. Heat up the oil in a pan and fry the battered sausages until golden brown.

TIP: If you still have the ingredients for coating left repeat the process. That way you will not waste anything, and the sausage will get another coat which will turn nice and crunchy after frying.

If you wish to take it up a notch, prepare some mashed potato as a side. Do not forget a nice cold glass of beer to complement your dinner – Czech style!
